What are the reasons for Hair Loss and What are the ways to prevent it. ?

The average human head has about 100,000 hair follicles. Each follicle will grow an average of about 20 individual hairs in a person's lifetime. Average hair loss is about 100 strands a day. Incidence of pattern baldness varies from population to population based on genetic background.

Treatments for the various forms of alopecia have limited success. Some hair loss sufferers make use of clinically proven treatments such as finasteride and topically applied minoxidil (in solution) in an attempt to prevent further loss and regrow hair. As a general rule, it is easier to maintain remaining hair than it is to regrow; however, the treatments mentioned will help some of the users suffering from Androgenetic alopecia, and there are new technologies in cosmetic transplant surgery and hair replacement systems that can be completely undetectable.

In the USA, there are only two drug-based treatments that have been approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and one product that has been cleared by the FDA for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, otherwise known as male or female pattern hair loss. The two FDA approved treatments are finasteride (marketed for hair loss as Propecia) and minoxidil.

Hair loss can be caused by many factors. Damaged, weak hair is a big factor. To prevent hair loss, use a strengthing shampoo and conditioner [A professional brand like Redken...not like Suave. I have found professional brands are better] Also, infuse your hair with protein by using a leave-in strenghthing conditioner. Alternate between that and a leave-in conditioner without protein. Also, before using ANY hot tools, use a hair protectant [Nexxus makes a good one]What are the reasons for Hair Loss and What are the ways to prevent it. ?
Lemme answer systematically -

Causes:

Hair grows in three phases - Anagen, Catagen %26amp; Telogen. The Catagen phase lasts for only a short intervening period. A problem occurs when the percentage of hair in the Telogen phase is increased over and above the norm. Reasons - poor nourishment or improper metabolism or stress or environmental conditions or a combination of any of these.

Under normal circumstances, hair growth in each hair follicle occurs in a cycle. There are three main phases of the hair growth cycle; anagen, catagen, and telogen. Anagen is the active growth phase when hair fiber is produced. This is followed by catagen, a period of controlled regression of the hair follicle. Ultimately the hair follicle enters telogen where it is in a so-called resting state. At any given point of time 10-15% of your hair is in the Telogen phase, the remaining being in Anagen phase. Alopecia areata primarily affects the hair follicle as it enters the anagen phase. Inflammatory cells of the immune system infiltrate around anagen hair follicles and cause them to stop producing hair fiber. Studies indicate that the initial event in the development of alopecia areata is the premature precipitation of anagen follicles into the telogen, resting state of the hair follicle cycle. Most commonly, hair follicles exit anagen, enter catagen, and then shed the hair fiber upon entering telogen. The follicles may then proceed back into the next anagen growth phase but, because of the continued activity of the disease, produce poor aberrant hair fiber.

Hair/Scalp problems start due to an improper hair-cell/scalp metabolism. Good nutrition is important to have thick, full, luxurious hair with bounce, shine and proper texture. To ensure good quality hair growth and texture, the hair root needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutritional substances, which it obtains from the blood. The starved hair follicle needs to be nourished from within. The lack of proper nutrition to the hair root and follicle and unbalanced vitamin intake leads to imbalanced metabolic conditions in the scalp, further leading to tired hair turning them to lose strength resulting in hairloss. Apart from lack of nutrients, Stress also causes hair/scalp-related problems by the constriction of capillaries. Stress also causes excessive perspiration attracting airborne debris and pollutants, thus clogging the hair follicles, turning them weak from the roots. Other factors are heredity, recent pregnancy, lactation.

Prevention:

Refrain from using any commercial shampoos available in the market that are Surfactant based and contain Sodium Lauryl Sulphate / Cocamide / Propylene Glycol / Sodium Chloride / Artificial Colouring or Pearlizing Agents. Remember, hair is never going to grow at a ';Jack and the beanstalk'; type of rate, the most you can hope for is to improve the strength and health of each hair follicle and to see an incremental increase in the rate of its growth. Also, follow the following in general:

1. Drink plenty of water,

2. Avoid stressful situations; do yoga/meditation to reduce stress,

3. Have a balanced diet containing lot of fresh fruits and leafy vegetables,

4. Do not blow dry too close to the scalp,

5. Do not brush wet hair; instead use a wide-tooth comb

Treatment:

1. Allopathic drugs: Finasteride / Propecia / Proscar, Minoxidil / Rogaine with documented, side-effects.

2. Alternative medicine: Saw Palmetto, a herb of South American origin has been clinically tested and proven by research to be more effective than Finasteride....all the natural way, without side effects. Umpteen testimonials can be seen on the net. Saw Palmetto nutritionally promotes the inhibition of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. Inhibiting this enzyme is important because of its ability to convert testosterone to DHT (dihydrotestosterone). The action of Saw Palmetto is similar to what Finasteride is designed for.

Imagine a hair supplement that has Saw Palmetto, Kelp, Stinging Nettle, Fo-Ti, Biotin, Inositol, Rosemary, Horsetail extract and some anti-oxidants as it's ingredients. Allopathic drugs are no match for such a compound and again the side-effects, conditions attached, S/P, C/I, etc are well documented. Besides, price is a factor.

Let me suggest readers the Canadian ';SEGALS'; brand of Advanced Hair Supplement and their Segals Advanced Scalp Formula that is like the abovementioned Alternative medicine methods. It works wonders, much more than Finastride/Tugain combination. Visible results appear in 4-6 weeks.

Lots to write but time -constraints...... Refer the site - http://haircarehelp.tripod.com for more details. Awesome results with the Segals range of products, finally and fortunately available in India
